King John's Castle is currently reopened after a €6 million redevelopment programme.  In 2013, visitors of all ages will find something to inspire and excite them at King John’s Castle in Limerick City. They will experience Limerick’s history as never before. The castle will boast a brand new visitor centre, bringing together the castle’s remarkable archaeology and 21st century technology allowing visitors to fully explore and discover King John’s Castle.

It’s a mighty fortress with a dramatic history and over 800 years of stories within its walls, which will be all brought to life in a stunning new exhibition. Touch-screen technology will connect you to tales of siege and warfare. Watch out for a dazzling array of CGI animations and ghostly projections. Visitors will be able to try on historic costumes - eighteenth century dresses or chainmail tunics. 3D models, discovery drawers and audio visuals will help the visitor to delve into the castle’s History. Enjoy the sights and sounds of medieval Limerick as you stroll through the visitor centre.

King John’s Castle is a 13th century Castle on ‘King’s Island’ in the heart of medieval Limerick City.  The Castle overlooks the majestic River Shannon offering wonderful views of Limerick City.  Discover history at its best, magnificent views and life in Norman times.  Explore 800 years of history brought to life in the imaginative historical exhibition, excavated pre-Norman houses, fortifications, siege mines, and the battlement walks.

Exciting news for King John's Castle as a €5.7 million redevelopment gets underway this year. Outlining the proposed work at the Castle Dr. Cunnane (CEO of Shannon Development) said: “The essence of the new visitor experience at King John’s Castle is to make the Castle itself the core attraction, boosted by living interpretation and re-enactment. The introduction of a wide range of new technologies and specialist multi media techniques will be used to bring the Castle’s development and historical events to life within the context of improved exhibition, interpretation and visitor facilities.

King John's Castle will shortly undergo a Fáilte Ireland/Shannon Development €6 million redevelopment programme opening in 2013 with a brand new visitor experience for Limerick City.

King John, as “Lord of Ireland” minted his own coins and the Royal moneyer would have struck the coins in the Castle mint. Today you can receive your own special coin as a souvenir of your visit to the Castle.  The sights, scenes and sounds of the Castle and its environs all combine to recreate the atmosphere of the era.
